Flax Artwork
I blend fibers, branches, thread, and wire into sculptural works.
I apply techniques I learned from Belgian artist Germana Tack in 2024. Using flax from my own field, mixed with Belgian and Egyptian flax, I explore themes of roots and cycles, migratory patterns and flight. With wire mesh, thread, and flax, I create barn swallows of varying sizes and flight positions. When suspended overhead, their orientation suggested the evening pattern of flycatchers rising and falling as they look for insects. Viewers could touch and rotate the piece to set the birds into motion. The most recent addition to my flax odyssey is indigo dye.
